U of O Watch mission, in the words of Foucault...

"One knows … that the university and in a general way, all teaching systems, which appear simply to disseminate knowledge, are made to maintain a certain social class in power; and to exclude the instruments of power of another social class. … It seems to me that the real political task in a society such as ours is to criticise the workings of institutions, which appear to be both neutral and independent; to criticise and attack them in such a manner that the political violence which has always exercised itself obscurely through them will be unmasked, so that one can fight against them." -- Foucault, debating Chomsky, 1971.

U of O video released::: Senate dignity hits Rock-bottom -- Breach of Criminal Code

We reported about the University of Ottawa Senate meeting of April 4, 2011, in the previous post HERE. And now the university has released its video of the meeting:

It's actually worst than our original blog report. Words cannot express the disrespect and pettiness displayed by president Allan Rock and most senators shown in this video.

It's unbelievable. In the past, such contempt for collegiality and due process would not have been displayed in public, much less on video.

This video was released on the same day that the graduate student association (GSAED) sent a damning letter to the university administration and to all senate members precisely about the human rights matter in question. See the GSAED letter HERE.

Among other offenses, executives in the Faculty of Medicine colluded in terminating a medical resident with the intent to compel the resident and other employees to abstain from providing information to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario. (LINK)(LINK)(LINK)

The latter is a criminal offense pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada. Allan Rock himself is collaborating in the crime by not immediately rectifying the dismissal; in light of the evidence from leaked emails.

These are the same leaked emails that student senator Joseph Hickey was trying to distribute at Senate (see above video). Allan Rock has known about the emails at least since the day they were leaked: He was a recipient - HERE.

This video is deeply disturbing when one considers that this is a room filled with $100,000 a year brats pretending to be professional. Rock doesn't know how to hold a meeting in the slightest, particularly how motions work. Yet, the student senator, Joe, is completely right in how he managed his motion, despite interference from Rock, the bully. And apparently what is okay for the Registrar in one meeting is not okay for Joe in this one. Rock seems to make the rules up as he goes along -whatever antoganizes Joe most. Petty and extremely unprofessional. As Joe did, he presented all the material first so that people could go over everything, then he read the full motion and gave any additional explanations into the record - and then he was going to ask for a seconder. What should never have happened is Rock interrupting and being a complete idiot. It was not his motion to make, particularly when not all the information was before the Senate. And then to say "Do we have a seconder on this motion?" is not the way to read a motion into the record!!! A two year old would be better and probably better behaved. Rock was arrogant, ignorant, bullying, antagonistic, disdainful, disrespectful - everything apparently the University of Ottawa is not! Surprise! And then what gets me is that the Senate, obviously stooges of Rock's did not second any motion, including Rock's pathetic attempt. And then the Senate members start to get up and leave the meeting - and the meeting hadn't even been adjourned!!!This is the Senate????? This video speaks volumes as to the pettiness and amateurishness of the Senate and of Mr. Rock and speaks to the brilliance of Joe, the student senator for standing his ground and committing to what is right. At the end of the day who loses with this Romper Room behaviour? The students who wanted to present their case of systemic racism and the broader university community. Am I right to believe that this so-called professional institution of higher learning does not have a harassment policy nor an anti-racism policy? I don't remember the Faculty of Education having a Faculty Equity Committee, so I'm assuming other faculties don't
that either.... such a retrograde and backward place....
